Ever fallen in love with something on the hanger… only to try it on and feel like it just isn’t you?

Cotton V-neck button-down dress with gathered waist – flattering Spring style

It happens to all of us. A dress looks beautiful, a jacket feels like the perfect piece, or a cosy knit catches your eye. But when you try it on, something just doesn’t feel quite right.

Often it’s not about the piece itself — it’s simply about the shape and how it works with your body, the way you want to wear it and what you want to wear with it.

Here are a few common situations we see in the shop, and some simple tweaks that can make all the difference.

  1. When a dress 'clings' in certain areas

You spot a dress that looks gorgeous on the hanger, but when you try it on, it feels snug in some areas (perhaps around the tummy) and doesn’t fall quite the way you expected.

This is really common and comes down to fit and proportion, not your body. A dress like the White Stuff Kate Midi Dress with it's V-neck button-down, gathered waist and fuller skirt can make a big difference. The gathered waist creates a gentle, flattering shape over the tummy, while the fuller skirt adds movement and balance, and the V-neck naturally draws the eye downward — together creating a look that feels comfortable, effortless, and wearable every day.

Remember, you’re not trying to hide anything — it’s all about finding shapes that feel good, move with you, and let you feel like yourself in the clothes you love.

  1. When jackets don’t work with layers

A short, more fitted jacket can look fantastic styled simply. But when you try to add a knit or layer underneath, it can suddenly feel tight or bulky.

If you like to layer (especially in our Scottish weather), a slightly looser coat or longer jacket can make things much easier. It gives you room for knits, shirts, or lighter layers underneath without feeling restricted, while still looking polished.

We absolutely love the Masai Tynna Jacket — with its slight A-line shape and raglan sleeves, there’s plenty of room for a cosy sweater underneath, making it one of our flattering jackets for Spring.

  1. When knitwear feels a bit shapeless

Knitwear should feel cosy and flattering, but sometimes it can feel a little boxy, bulky, or tricky to layer. Small details can make a big difference — helping create shape, balance, and a look that feels comfortable and confident.

  • Shorter lengths: A slightly shorter knit can feel lighter and more balanced, avoiding a heavy or shapeless silhouette. Try the Part Two Anessa Cardigan with your favourite white tee for an effortless look.

  • Defined hems or subtle shaping: Knits with ribbed hems or tapering create gentle shape without clinging. The best selling French Connection Lily Mozart Jumper illustrates this beautifully, with it's deep ribbed hem.

  • Layering over a shirt: Layering a knit over a shirt adds structure and movement. Some pieces, like Yest Isen Knit Shirt with an attached shirt hem, do this for you — the shirt bottom peeks out to create a polished, flattering look without any extra bulk.

These little tweaks make a big difference in how a knit feels and moves, so you can enjoy cosy layers that are stylish, comfortable, and easy to wear every day.

Often it’s not about changing your style — it’s just about finding the version of a piece that works best for you. Sometimes the smallest adjustment in shape can turn something you like into something you absolutely love wearing.

And if you ever feel unsure about fit, we’re always more than happy to help you find the piece that feels right for you.

Updated: Mar 5

There’s something about March that feels like a deep breath.

The light changes. The mornings feel softer. And suddenly, we’re ready for a little reset — in life and in our wardrobes.

At INIS, spring isn’t about chasing trends. It’s about refreshing what you love, styling it differently, and adding a few beautifully made pieces that make getting dressed feel easy again.

It’s the perfect time to rethink your favourite pieces, experiment with colour, and try a few styling tricks that make every outfit feel intentional — without needing a whole new wardrobe. From clever layering to the simple 3-piece rule, these small touches can completely lift your look and your mood this season.

Tip One: A Gentle Wardrobe Reset

Before buying anything new, try this:

  • Pack away the heavy winter knits you won’t reach for now.

  • Bring lighter layers to the front.

  • Try on pieces you haven’t worn in a while.

Spring refresh trick: Swap dark knits for lighter fabrics and brighter colours. A soft pastel or a bold, cheerful jumper can lift your mood and instantly update your look.

Tip 2: The 3-Piece Rule (Your Secret Style Trick)

If an outfit feels unfinished, this is usually why.

Every great outfit has three elements:

  • Trousers + top + jacket

  • Jeans + knit + scarf

  • Dress + cardigan + necklace

That third piece adds interest and makes everything feel more “put together”. It could be a lightweight blazer, an knitted waistcoat, a longline cardigan, or a beautiful scarf.

Tip 3: Clever Layering (Without the Bulk)

Spring weather keeps us guessing — so layering is key.

Try:

  • A cotton tee under a fine knit

  • A relaxed shirt under a lightweight cardi

  • A cotton sweater over your shoulders

Pro tip: This season, lighter knits in bright colours are perfect for layering. Pair a pastel jumper over a shirt or a bold sweater with comfy jeans for a fresh, effortless look.

Natural fabrics make all the difference — breathable cotton, soft linen blends, and quality knits feel great on the skin and last beyond one season.

Tip 4: Add One “Lift” Piece

If you invest in anything new this spring, make it count.

Choose something that:

  • Works with at least three items you already own

  • Feels comfortable immediately

  • Is beautifully made

One thoughtful addition can refresh your whole wardrobe.

We're dedicating this month's blog to our new Peebles store!

What's one of the first things that comes to mind when you think of February?

It's probably Valentines Day. But not so much this year, February is special for us in a different way: it’ll be our first full month in our new Peebles store!

The store has only been open since mid-January, and it’s already buzzing with loyal local customers and plenty of new faces, all excited to see INIS Peebles and its transformation. We really have hit the jackpot with this new space — with its gorgeous big windows, all on one level, and a prime location right in the centre of the High Street!

A Real Family Affair

The famous Caldwell's Ice Cream shop

The project was a real family affair. Before becoming INIS, the space was home to the famous and much-loved Caldwell's Ice Cream (which you can still enjoy at their café in the neighbouring town of Innerleithen). What makes it feel extra special is the family connection. While the Peebles site has taken on a new life as INIS, Caldwell's is connected to Claire’s daughter-in-law’s family, giving a lovely sense of continuity rather than a complete fresh start.

Before & After

It’s been so lovely watching the space come together. With more light, a better flow, and plenty of thoughtful details, it already feels like a shop that invites you to slow down and browse. It was truly all hands on deck — Claire’s son Josh (JL Joinery) took on the joinery work, and sister Sam proved just as handy with a paintbrush! The transformation is subtle but striking — using our brand colours throughout the space really helps bring the shop to life.

"Such a lovely shop! I'm so glad you're now on the high street!" - J Milne

"We are so excited for your new venture and could not ask for a more worthwhile business to take on the premises!" - J Todd

See you in Peebles soon!

We’ve loved seeing so many of you pop into the new Peebles store to wish us well — it’s been great catching up with familiar faces and meeting plenty of new ones too.

Here’s to lots more happy moments, laughter, and browsing together in this lovely space!

Curious to see the transformation for yourself? Pop in for a visit, check out our latest collections, and don’t forget to follow us on Instagram and Facebook to keep up with all the news from INIS!
